Studies have shown that periodontal disease (gum disease) is linked to many different diseases of inflammation, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, low birth-weight babies, erectile dysfunction and several others. The most prominent link is between gum disease and Type 2 diabetes; uncontrolled gum disease can lead to increased blood sugar levels and HBA1C, while managing gum disease can help decrease these numbers. Patients with diabetes will also have worse cases of gum disease due to their decreased ability to fight infection.
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria below the gum line that destroys the bone that supports the teeth. This disease is a chronic infection, where bacteria multiplies below the gums and makes teeth get loose, shift, fall out and can cause pain in the gums. But do not worry! Gum disease is treatable and manageable. We treat gum disease in several ways, but the primary treatment is scaling and root planning (deep cleaning). A deep cleaning is a process where we anesthetize the gums and clean all the root surfaces and below the gum line to disrupt bacteria and tartar to let the gums heal. This process along with brushing twice daily and flossing daily can help prevent gum disease from destroying your jaw bone and hurting your whole body health!
